BMI, IV Drip Rate & BSA Calculator: Educational Unit Converter

BMI + Medical Dosage Unit Converter

Educational unit conversion & arithmetic reference

Adults only. Children and adolescents require age- and sex-specific growth-chart percentiles, not this adult formula.

Mass Unit Conversion

Fill to also get the equivalent volume in mL.

Weight-Based Arithmetic (you supply the rate)

This tool does not and will not supply this number. Take it from the official prescribing information for the specific drug.

IV Drip Rate

Printed on the giving set packaging (commonly 10, 15, 20, or 60 for micro-drip).

Mosteller BSA plus the Devine-style ideal and adjusted body weight figures that commonly accompany it. These are reference formulas, not recommendations.

Enter values and calculate — BMI with WHO adult categories, medical unit conversions and weight-based arithmetic, or body surface area with ideal body weight references

Body mass index is a population-level screening ratio, not a measure of health or body composition: it does not distinguish muscle from fat, and a muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight receive the same figure despite very different physiology. The WHO cut-offs used here are the international adult standard, though some populations have different risk thresholds at the same index value, and children need growth-chart percentiles instead. The dosage section performs arithmetic only — the milligram-per-kilogram rate and the drop factor come from you, taken from the official prescribing information and the giving-set packaging, because those are the authoritative sources and a calculator is not. Ideal and adjusted body weight are historical reference formulas that appear in pharmacy calculations rather than measurements of anything physical. Nothing here accounts for renal or hepatic function, interactions, age, pregnancy or any other clinical factor, all of which change real dosing. Verify every number independently and consult a licensed healthcare professional before acting on any of it.

BMI, Unit Conversion, IV Drip Rate and Body Surface Area: An Educational Reference Tool

This BMI calculator classifies adult body mass index against the standard WHO categories in metric or imperial units. Its Unit & Dosage Math mode handles the arithmetic that surrounds clinical calculations, converting between mg, mcg and g, working out volume from a concentration and running weight-based arithmetic where you supply the mg/kg rate from your own verified reference, plus a genuine IV drip rate calculator using the standard drops-per-minute formula. A Body Surface Area mode uses the Mosteller formula alongside the Devine-style ideal and adjusted body weight figures that commonly accompany it. Every rate and factor stays fully editable, because the authoritative source is always your own verified reference, never a number built into this tool.

How to Use

This tool has three tabs: BMI, Unit & Dosage Math and Body Surface Area.

Step 1: Using BMI mode

  • Select your Unit System, Metric (kg, cm) or Imperial (lb, in).
  • Enter Weight and Height in your chosen units.
  • Tap Calculate. The result shows the BMI value and its WHO adult category. This mode is for adults only, children and adolescents need age- and sex-specific growth-chart percentiles instead of this formula.

Step 2: Using Unit & Dosage Math mode

  • Under Mass Unit Conversion, enter an Amount and its From Unit, micrograms, milligrams or grams.
  • Optionally enter a Concentration (mg/mL) to also get the equivalent volume in millilitres.
  • Under Weight-Based Arithmetic, enter the Body Weight in kilograms and the Rate (mg/kg). This rate field is intentionally always blank by default, you must enter it yourself from the official prescribing information for the specific drug, since this tool never supplies or suggests this number.
  • Under IV Drip Rate, enter the Volume in mL, the Drop Factor (gtt/mL) printed on the giving set packaging, commonly 10, 15, 20, or 60 for micro-drip, and the Time in hours.
  • Tap Calculate to see all the unit conversions and arithmetic results together.

Step 3: Using Body Surface Area mode

  • Switch to the Body Surface Area tab. Enter Height in cm and Weight in kg.
  • Select Sex, used only for the ideal body weight reference formula’s different base figures.
  • Tap Calculate to see BSA using the Mosteller formula, alongside ideal body weight and adjusted body weight reference figures.

Step 4: Exporting your result

  • Use Print / PDF for a clean printable copy or Copy to paste the figures into your notes.

Key Features

  • BMI calculation with standard WHO adult category classification, in metric or imperial units
  • Mass unit conversion between micrograms, milligrams and grams, with optional volume conversion from a concentration
  • Weight-based arithmetic where you supply the mg/kg rate from your own verified reference, this tool never suggests or supplies a dosing rate itself
  • IV drip rate calculator using the standard volume × drop factor ÷ time formula
  • Mosteller body surface area formula alongside Devine-style ideal and adjusted body weight reference figures
  • Every rate and factor stays fully editable, sourced from you, not built into the tool
  • A prominent, permanent safety disclaimer across every mode and every export

Who Should Use This Tool

Nursing and pharmacy students practicing unit conversion, IV drip rate and BSA arithmetic for coursework or exam preparation. Also useful as a quick reference for healthcare professionals cross-checking their own manual calculation, always alongside the official prescribing information and a licensed professional’s judgment, never as a replacement for either.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Does this tool tell me what dose of a medication to give?

No, it never does. It only converts units and performs arithmetic using a mg/kg rate that you supply yourself from the drug’s official prescribing information.

2. How do I calculate an IV drip rate in drops per minute?

Multiply the total volume in mL by the drop factor printed on the giving set, then divide by the total infusion time in minutes. This tool calculates it instantly once you enter these three values.

3. Can I use this BMI calculator for a child?

No, this adult BMI formula and the WHO categories shown here do not apply to children or adolescents. They need age- and sex-specific growth-chart percentiles instead.

4. What is the Mosteller formula used for?

It estimates body surface area from height and weight, and BSA is commonly used in pharmacy calculations, particularly for chemotherapy dosing. This tool calculates it alongside ideal and adjusted body weight reference figures.

5. Is BMI an accurate measure of someone’s health?

No, BMI is a population-level screening ratio, not a direct measure of body composition or health. It cannot distinguish muscle mass from fat, so a muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight receive an identical figure.
