BOD and COD both measure oxygen-consuming pollutants, but BOD is the biodegradable fraction while COD includes chemically oxidisable matter too, so COD is always the larger of the two and the ratio is always below 1. The ratio is an approximation — the true relationship depends on the specific waste, so a lab-tested value for your effluent should always take priority. A ratio near 0.5 or above generally indicates readily biodegradable waste well suited to biological treatment; a low ratio suggests toxic or non-biodegradable components that may inhibit biological processes and need physico-chemical or advanced treatment. Standard BOD is measured over five days at 20°C, and removal efficiency depends heavily on the process and operating conditions. Treat these as planning estimates, not substitutes for laboratory analysis and local discharge standards.

How to Use
This tool has three tabs: Estimate, Efficiency and Multi-Stage.
Step 1: Using Estimate mode
- Select your Direction: COD → estimate BOD or BOD → estimate COD.
- Enter your known value in mg/L.
- Select a Wastewater Source from the dropdown, Domestic Sewage, Textile, Dairy or Pharma industrial or Treated Effluent, each pre-filling a typical BOD/COD ratio.
- Check the Ratio field that fills in automatically and replace it with your own lab-tested ratio whenever you have one, since a real measured value always beats a reference figure.
- Tap Calculate to see the estimated value and a plain-language biodegradability interpretation.
Step 2: Using Efficiency mode
- Switch to the Efficiency tab and select your Parameter, BOD or COD.
- Enter your Influent and Effluent concentrations in mg/L.
- Tap Calculate to see the percent removal efficiency of that treatment step.
Step 3: Using Multi-Stage mode
- Switch to the Multi-Stage tab and select your Parameter, COD or BOD, to track.
- Tap Add Stage for each step in your treatment train, in order, raw influent, then primary, then secondary treatment and so on, entering that stage’s concentration.
- Tap Calculate to see the reduction tracked stage by stage across your entire treatment train.
